Israeli Airlines Delay Operations to Dubai and Morocco Amid Security Concerns

Israeli Airlines Face Setbacks in Returning to Dubai and Marrakesh

The aviation landscape for Israeli airlines is undergoing significant turbulence as security-related disputes and stricter screening requirements are causing delays in the resumption and expansion of international operations. El Al has announced a postponement in its planned flights to Dubai, which were originally set to resume in November, now pushed back to December 15. Additionally, Arkia has suspended its service to Dubai indefinitely and has also halted ticket sales for flights to Marrakesh, responding to directives from Israeli security officials.

The challenges surrounding the Dubai route have persisted for several months, primarily due to the ongoing Operation Roaring Lion. This operation has led to restrictions on Israeli airlines operating flights to the United Arab Emirates, despite Flydubai and Etihad continuing their flights between the two nations until the end of September. The crux of the disagreement between Israeli security officials and Emirati authorities revolves around the installation of Israeli security screening equipment and the overall security arrangements at Dubai airport, which remain contentious.

An attempted hijacking of a Flydubai aircraft on September 30 heightened the situation, prompting scrutiny over security screening protocols for flight crews and the operations of foreign carriers. This incident caused Flydubai to suspend its flights to Israel, leading to a comprehensive review of existing security measures. Although El Al and Arkia indicated their readiness to resume flights to Dubai post-incident, the timeline is contingent upon resolving the persistent security issues. Israeli officials have also mandated a new requirement that seeks to standardize security arrangements for all flights heading to Israel, which includes consolidating Flydubai’s operations into a designated area at the airport.

The repercussions of these security concerns are extending to routes to Morocco as well. Arkia's decision last week to halt ticket sales for Marrakesh flights remains in effect, and the airline is currently evaluating its ability to operate previously sold tickets. Should Israeli carriers be prohibited from flying to Marrakesh, Arkia has indicated that it may seek to arrange these flights through commercial partnerships.

Furthermore, Arkia is not alone in facing these challenges; Israir has already suspended its Marrakesh flights, paused ticket sales, and put future expansion plans on hold. In a similar vein, Sun d’Or, a subsidiary of El Al, has delayed its Marrakesh service launch, which was originally scheduled for November 16, now postponed until at least December 15. The ongoing disruption to these travel routes highlights the broader implications of security regulations on international aviation and the travel plans of many passengers.
